If you’d like to see how we to took a sturdy, laminate dresser and turned it into a completely different piece, you can see everything from start to finish on our YouTube Channel! It’s a three part series from unboxing the products, prep work (super important!) and painting (the fun part).
This was the first time working as a creator with Country Chic Paint, a company based out of Canada. 🇨🇦 I’ve been following them for a while, and both our custom Thomasville cabinet and vintage rolltop desk were painted using Country Chic Paint.
When I saw a Broyhill dresser on Facebook Marketplace for FREE, I knew I wanted it for my workshop (aka the dining room). I had been looking for a low dresser or buffet to hold all my paint and painterly supplies, and this looked perfect. One evening I dragged the family to a house in Ashburn because we were headed out that way anyway to pickup my husband’s car at the shop. The kids are getting used to being dragged around to pickup and drop off furniture (they are good little troopers)
When we got this thing home I realized the drawers spelled funky, there was a ton of dust inside and we’d lost one of the knobs. I knew I was going to change the batman pulls, but I could have spray painted the knobs…oh well. Husband got out the leaf blower and blew out a cloud of dust from inside the dresser and we left the drawers to air out.
At the first chance I had I sanded the top three drawers and started on the dresser top. I quickly realized it was laminate – womp womp. Most furniture painters turn their nose up at laminate, but as you’ll see later, I think laminate furniture is easy to paint and “cheap” wood can still make fantastic furniture. Even with the laminate discovery, the drawer fronts were wood, so that was exciting news. The bottom four drawers were really wonky and shallow, so we brainstormed and I suggested cutting out the drawer supports to open up the bottom and make it a larger shelf space. That would work beter to hold paint and brushes anyway. My husband agreed and said your wish is my command. 😉
After the cutting was finished, it was time to figure out how to make a sturdy bottom to hold everyhing. This took some thinking, and luckily my husband found a free wooden palette in a trash heap at work. He brought it home and he cut up the planks, and sanded with the help of our oldest kiddo. Are you following us on Instagram? Because that’s where we post progress like this!
Well, my friend, this is where all the still images stop and the video begins. Head over to our Channel to watch the videos. I have a hard time thinking about taking video AND pictures, maybe someday I’ll be able to remember to do both but for right now I’m a little linear…and I am LOVING the video taking and editing process!!
I felt incredibly honored that Country Chic Paint chose me, little ol’ quarter-time-painter ME to work with and send products to. I can’t wait to work on the next project with them, it’s an amazing company dedicated to supporting creators, and protecting the environment.
This project was almost completely FREE: the dresser was free, all my CCP products were generously supplied, only the pulls from DLawless and Home Depot were overhead.
