Another Beautiful Table Update!

It’s official – I’m obsessed with bleaching wood!
You already know I love the two toned look (see my vintage roll top desk, and vintage maple desk, and free to farmhouse buffet, and Thomasville console table). I’ve done a lot of wood/paint combos but on those pieces, I just stripped or sanded the finish off and then did a wash over the wood. For this project, I did a little experimenting!
I bought this table from a friend (the same friend who sold me the vintage maple desk) and I knew I wanted to keep this one. But it took me 2 years to get around to working on it! Mainly because I was intimidated assuming the finish was going to be hard to remove. And I was right.
I knew I wanted a light top and middle, and painted legs. I stripped the finish using Citristrip, but that dark finish was persistent and had turned the wood red. More stripping and sanding wasn’t going to help, and even though I knew I would do a wash on top, I decided to try bleaching just to see what would happen.
I’ll have to do this technique again and document it properly next time…and there will definitely be a next time because WOWWW it turned out great. Washing with regular bleach and sitting outside in the sun really lightened that wood and got the red out. The bleach, plus a wash of Simplicity gave me the look I was going for.
Instagram Reel
I don’t have a YouTube video for this table, just a reel. I started and finished this project during the summer in between work and spending hours at the pool with the kids. So most of the time I was stealing a few minutes here and there to work on it, and I wasn’t thinking about getting video footage for a long tutorial. You can see the reel on our Insta Page!
