At some point in this furniture refinishing journey, I have collected more pieces of furniture than I have time to work on. From what I gather looking on Instagram, that is not a unique problem. Although we have the storage space IN our house..that doesn’t mean I want it filled with furniture a la hoarding style. So at some point in 2022 (maybe a year or longer since I bought this table), it became a priority to start working on what I already had, and to stop buying from FBM (free doesn’t count!).
As the title of this post says, I bought this sewing table for $20 from someone in Chantilly, VA. At the time I was looking for a table for us to use in our front room of the house to hold a lamp. Throughout the year I moved furniture around so the lamp table wasn’t necessary, but I still thought it would be useful, even as a sewing table again if I wanted! (I have a Viking sewing machine that can sit on top)
Pretty rough looking, but I decided I would try to sand the orange finish off the legs to leave them a raw wood color, and paint the top. Off and on, as I had time available, over a month, I slowly chipped away at this project, starting with sanding and stripping the finish on the legs. Our YouTube video has all the footage so check that out and see my only fancy tool, the SurfPrep sander in action.
When Country Chic reached out and asked if I had a project to use for their August color of the month, Opulence, I thought this would be a fun and unexpected color for this table.
Per usual, my how-to process is documented in our YouTube Channel, so check it out!
The only regrets I have about this table is how much I overworked the paint and top coat. My coats were WAY too thick. I am still working on getting that perfectly smooth finish without a sprayer and honestly..it’s tough. If you are Type A like me, hand painting might frustrate you. At some point in the near future, I will be trying out a sprayer again to see if I can learn how to use it and get the pro finish I really want. But, man, so many cons with spraying *sigh* Be sure you’re on Insta with us because that’s where you will get the behind the scenes scoop and learn with us.
