When I saw this vintage desk in our local freecycle Facebook group, I knew it had a ton of potential! I realized my kids’ school music teacher was giving it away! I was so excited to have another solid piece to experiment with.
My original plan was to try and strip off the old finish around the top ledge and the drawers so I could have a two-toned desk, like this one! And also this rolltop desk! Apparently two-toned is my thing. 😉
But as I mention in my YouTube video, I quickly realized how much work it was going to be to remove all that finish, especially in the little drawer grooves. I’ve done that before and it was hard work (and I wasn’t able to remove all of the finish, eventually I white washed over to lighten up the wood).
So, I settled for sanding the ledge (that was easy), and the drawer edges, and decided to paint the middle part. I think it came out PRETTY AMAZING wouldn’t you say?!?!? The best part – it was all done INDOORS with ECOFRIENDLY paint and products.

I condensed the transformation process into a 5 min video so it won’t take long to watch!
